Rédigées entre 1938 et 1975, à des instants de crise profonde de la société de son pays, les quatre contributions de Patocka à la "question tchèque" présentées dans ce volume prennent un caractère non seulement d'actualité, mais d'urgence à un moment où, dans presque tous les pays d'Europe centrale et orientale libérés du communisme, le nouveau mot d'ordre du "retour à l'Europe" se voit en danger d'être submergé sous un retour en force des nationalismes exclusifs à la mode d'autrefois. Le propos du philosophe n'est pas en effet de cerner dans sa particularité, une identité nationale mythifiée, mais de replacer l'histoire et la culture de la Bohême dans l'horizon universel de l'idée européenne à travers une réflexion dont la lucidité ne recule pas devant la critique la plus sévère. Dans cette tentative pour dégager l'idée en acte de l'Europe du devenir d'une tranche d'Europe empirique, le lecteur français trouvera, outre des éclaircissements sur le terroir spirituel où s'enracinent les récents développements à l'Est et une introduction à un monde à la fois proche et inconnu, une illustration concrète de certaines idées éthiques développées par Patocka dans les Essais héritiques et Liberté et sacrifice et, au plus profond, une invitation à poursuivre la réflexion de son côté de la barrière qui n'est plus. Par-delà, les frontières qui demeurent, les questions posées dans ces textes, par celui que Walter Biemel a raison de qualifize d' "un des rares véritables Européens de notre temps", s'adressent aussi à l'Occident et à son européanité.

For most students in medieval studies, Eastern Europe is marginal and East European topics simply exotica. A peculiar form of Orientalism may thus be responsible for the exclusion of the Avars, Bulgars, Khazars, and Cumans from the medieval history of the European continent. This collection of studies is an attempt to stimulate research in a comparative mode and to open up a broader discussion about such key themes as material culture, ethnicity, historical memory, or conversion in the context of social and political developments in early medieval Europe. Another goal of this volume is to introduce a number of new approaches to the study of what is known as “medieval nomads.” Without explicitly rejecting the model of raid vs. trade famously introduced by Anatoly Khazanov, many contributions in this volume shift the emphasis on internal developments that have received until now little or no attention. Since its founding in 1962, Eastern European Economics has consistently published the finest research on the economies of Central and Eastern Europe--their functioning under central planning; reformist trends in communist-era economic theory and practice; and more recently, the ongoing processes of transition to market economics in different countries and their integration into the broader European and global economies. The journal has always drawn on a wide range of original research on and from the region, historically including translations of selected published and unpublished works. The editorial mission of Eastern European Economics is to reflect developments in Central and Eastern European economic thought and policy that are of most interest to those professionally concerned with this field and with the future of the new Europe.
